Port Authority of the Ionian Sea and Tecnopolo Mediterraneo sign a memorandum of understanding for the energy and sustainable development of Port of Taranto

PORT OF TARANTO, 11 NOVEMBER 2025. The Port Authority of the Ionian Sea (AdSPMI) and the Tecnopolo Mediterraneo for Sustainable Development of Taranto today signed a Memorandum of Understanding, establishing a collaboration aimed at promoting the Port of Taranto as a strategic hub for renewable energy, at both national and international levels

The agreement was signed by Giovanni Gugliotti, Extraordinary Commissioner of AdSPMI, and Antonio Messeni Petruzzelli, President of Tecnopolo and Full Professor of Innovation Management at the Politecnico di Bari. The initiative forms part of a broader project launched by AdSPMI for the preparation of a “Study for the planning of port areas to be dedicated to potential renewable energy facilities”, encompassing offshore wind, photovoltaic systems, energy storage, and port energy communities. The study aims to assess the infrastructural, logistical, and economic impacts of upcoming transformations at the Port of Taranto by mapping and classifying port areas compatible with renewable energy production and logistics activities and defining possible scenarios for their (re)use.

The expertise of Tecnopolo, together with a network of regional and national specialists being mobilised, provides strategic and professional support for the study, which will be conducted in full synergy with an internal AdSP working group.

The launch of this collaboration with Tecnopolo Mediterraneo represents a key milestone in supporting the Authority’s development strategy. We hope this synergy will evolve into a true laboratory for the Port of Taranto, which today more than ever looks to the future as a potential model for energy transition and environmental sustainability. Through Tecnopolo’s network of talents, companies, and professionals, we aim to foster research and knowledge to create new operational scenarios for the port’s assets, generating positive effects for the local economy and port and city communities,” said Extraordinary Commissioner Gugliotti.

Collaboration with the Port Authority of the Ionian Sea represents a strategic step in building an innovation ecosystem that combines sustainability, applied research, and industrial competitiveness. This protocol marks the start of a shared journey that integrates strategic vision with operational analysis: we will begin by studying the current state of the port to identify technological solutions and innovative energy models, with particular attention to the possible creation of a port energy community. With its Mediterranean reach and industrial vocation, the Port of Taranto is the ideal site to test new technologies and processes supporting ecological transition. Through Tecnopolo, we will integrate scientific expertise, laboratories, and enterprises to develop joint projects, attract investment, and generate economic, environmental, and social value for the territory,” added Tecnopolo President Messeni Petruzzelli.
