new container terminal
The importance of the Port of Taranto depends not only on its present infrastructure but – above all – on the potential for further growth of container traffic, thanks to the port’s favourable location and the availability of large areas on the landside. Market studies carried out for the new Port Development Plan have suggested establishing a new container terminal on the extension of Pier 5, which should be operated as a common-user facility.
This project, which is listed in the Port Authority’s Working Programme for the year 2008 as well as in the Investment Programme for the years 2008-2010, will benefit from the simplified procedures provided by national regulations.
Moreover, the new container terminal will work in synergy with existing port terminals and with Taranto’s planned Logistics Platform.
A key role in the establishment and subsequent management of this terminal should be played by private operators, whose contribution would also bring them fiscal benefits.
