The recently approved Port Development Plan has two main goals: to extend the port’s commercial facilities to make it easier to attract new traffic; and to improve relations with the city of Taranto by opening new areas of the port estate to municipal use.
Following detailed market studies of each sector of the port economy, the plan has outlined a set of key measures:

• Extension of Pier 5 to accommodate a new container terminal;
• Encouragement of ro-ro and ro-pax traffic;
• Extension of rail connections to all existing and planned port areas and quays;
• A multi-use centre
