logistic sector
The Port Authority has launched several planning initiatives since 2002 with the aim of promoting the role of Taranto as an intermodal logistics platform.
As a result of this process, two different – but closely related – projects have taken shape: the Logistics Platform and the Distripark.
Logistic platform
The Logistics Platform, on which construction work is due to commence in the first half of 2008, will cover a total area of nearly 200,000 square metres. Located within the port estate, close to Pier 4, it will act as an intermodal centre, allowing goods to be transferred between road, rail and sea transport, and will provide cargo services. The aim is to achieve a fully integrated operation based on ICT systems.
Distripark
The creation of a Distripark in Taranto has been promoted by the Port Authority as well as by Taranto’s City Council, Province and Chamber of Commerce, with a view to keeping portrelated cargo on site and producing additional income for the local economy through logistics and processing activities that can add value to port-related goods.
According to the current project, the facility will consist of 110 prefabricated modules that can be grouped according to the user’s requirements. Each warehouse will cover nearly 1,600 square metres and will have technical equipment.
