Motorways Of The Sea

The Port Authority of Taranto has earmarked various berths in the commercial port for new shortsea shipping lines as part of the national and European Union project known as ‘Motorways of Sea’.
Would-be operators will have the use of Quay 1 (240 metres in length with 8.5 metres draught) and the west side and seaward end of Pier 1 (quay length of 450 metres with 8.0 to 12.5 metres draught) as well as Quay 2 (290 metres in length with 12.5 metres draught).

The New.Ton Project

Prompted by the completion of the Via Egnatia and related development opportunities, the Port Authority of Taranto began a close co-operation with some Greek ports and institutions in 2005 under the so-called Newton Project, financed
by the European Union through its Interreg IIIB Archi-med programme.
Newton is short for ‘Networking Ports to Promote Intermodal Transport and Better Access to Hinterland’. The project aims to enhance intermodality in the countries involved – Italy and Greece – and to improve connections with internal regions by taking advantage of the new Via Egnatia motorway. In particular, it focuses on the role of ports such as Taranto, Igoumenitsa, Kavala and Thessaloniki.
